Glossary of Online Poker Terms
- Action – player's turn to bet, raise, or fold
- All-in – to commit all your chips in a poker hand
- Ante – mandatory bet by all players before cards are dealt
- Backdoor – draw requiring two connectors or same suited cards to complete
- Bad beat – player’s bad loss against the odds
- Bankroll – amount of money a player sets aside for poker
- Big blind – mandatory bet before cards are dealt made by player two seats after button
- Boat – full house
- Blank – community card that doesn't help a hand
- Blind – mandatory bet placed before cards are dealt
- Bluff – bet or raise without the best hand to induce an opponent's fold
- Board – shared or community cards
- Bottom pair – pair including a hole card and lowest community card
- Bounty – cash prize for eliminating a tournament player
- Bubble – player eliminated before the money in a tournament
- Burn – card dealer discards before dealing community cards
- Button – moving mark indicating where the dealer (Seat 1) is sat
- Buy-in – amount of money required to enter a tournament
- Call – bet the amount of another player's bet
- Calling station – player who often calls bets but rarely raises
- Cap – last raise permitted in a Limit Poker betting round
- Check – choosing not to bet but stay in the hand if there has been no previous bet
- Connector – Texas Hold’em hole cards in sequence
- Continuation bet – bet made post–flop by player who bet first pre–flop
- Deuce – two
- Draw – hand needing specific cards to complete
- Drawing dead – player cannot win hand, regardless of community cards to come
- Equity – value in a pot
- Fish – inexperienced/bad player
- Fifth street – river
- Flop – first three community cards dealt
- Flush – hand consisting of cards all the same suit
- Fold – return cards to the dealer, end participation in the hand
- Fourth street – turn
- Full house – hand consisting of three of a kind plus a pair
- Freeroll – tournament with no buy–in required
- Freezeout – game without rebuy option
- Gutshot – uncompleted straight requiring one card
- Heads-up – poker between two players only
- Hole cards – cards dealt face down to player
- Kicker – highest unpaired card in a hand used to break ties
- Limp – call the big blind preflop
- Loose – describes a reckless or aggressive player
- Monster – strong hand
- MTT – Multi–Table Tournament
- Muck – fold a hand without revealing hole cards
- Nuts – best possible hand
- Offsuit – hole cards of different suits
- Open – make the first bet
- Outs – cards remaining in the pack that can complete a winning hand
- Overcard – hole card higher than any on the board
- Overpair – pocket pair higher than any possible using community cards
- Play the board – using all community cards to create hand
- Pocket pair – pair of hole cards
- Position – player's turn in betting order
- Post – place bet
- Push – bet or raise all–in
- Quads – four of a kind
- Rags – bad opening hand
- Rainbow – a flop consisting of cards of different suits
- Raise – to bet more than the previous bet
- Rake – percentage of pot taken by cardroom
- Ring game – cash game
- River – fifth and final community card
- Satellite – tournament awarding entry into larger tournament
- Set – three of a kind including two hole cards
- Shootout – tournament with winner of each table progressing to next round
- Showdown – players reveal cards to decide a winning hand
- Side pot – extra pots contested after a multiple all–in
- Sit and Go – tournament that starts once all seats are filled. Normally single–table
- Small blind – mandatory small bet by player after button before cards are dealt
- Straight – hand consisting of connecting cards
- Third street – flop
- Split pot – equally divided pot for tie hands
- Tilt – emotional distress/loss of concentration due to bad beat
- Top pair – pair including a hole card and highest community card
- Trey – three
- Trips – three of a kind including only one hole card
- Turn – fourth community card
- Under the gun – first player to act before the flop
- Value bet – bet made to induce a call
